Accessibility
Pathway should work for everyone, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, a magnifier or larger text. This page says what we aim for, how we have checked it so far, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.
DraftAccessibility statement, 17 October 2026. It will be updated after the manual audit.
What we aim for
Pathway is built to WCAG 2.2 level AA, the web accessibility standard, in light and dark mode. Automated checks pass in light and dark. A manual audit is planned.
- Text version
- Every guide has a text version with all of its information, for people who cannot use the 3D model. It also prints or saves as a PDF.
- Plain language
- Guides aim for about a grade 6 reading level, with a list of the medical words used and what each one means.
- Keyboard and screen readers
- Links, buttons and form controls work with a keyboard and show a visible focus outline. In the step-by-step guide, the arrow keys move between steps and buttons turn the model. Pages use headings, landmarks and labels for screen readers.
- Motion and colour
- Movement is turned off when your device asks for reduced motion. Text meets the AA contrast ratio in light and dark mode.
- Zoom and small screens
- Pages fit a screen 320 pixels wide, and text can be enlarged to 200% without scrolling sideways.
How it was checked
- Automated check
- axe-core (an automated accessibility checker) at three widths (390, 834 and 1280 pixels), in light and dark mode, on the home page, the lists of procedures, every guide overview and model page, text versions, a handout, a step-by-step guide and the pages for clinicians and hospitals: no problems found, 17 October 2026.
- Reflow and text size
- Every page checked at 320 pixels wide, and with the browser’s text size doubled, for anything that scrolls sideways: none found, 17 October 2026.
- Keyboard
- A scripted keyboard check of the menu, the search, a guide overview and its quiz, using Tab, Enter, Space and Escape: focus stayed visible and nothing trapped it, 17 October 2026.
- Not yet done
- Testing with screen readers (VoiceOver, NVDA and TalkBack), a full manual audit by an accessibility specialist, and testing with patients who use assistive technology.
Automated checkers find only some problems. That is why a manual audit is planned before launch.
What does not work yet
- The 3D model is visual. Each step’s words say what the model shows, and the text version has everything the guide has.
- Guides are in English only for now.
- The site has not yet been checked with a screen reader.
